06:00 am: It's All Relative
"Why do you call Daddy Peter?"
"Because that's his name."
"No it's not, it's Daddy."
"Peter is his name to me; Daddy is his name to you."

Trying to make it clear, I asked: "What do you call Grandma and Grandpa?"
"Grandma and Grandpa."
"What does Daddy call Grandma and Grandpa?"
"I don't know. What?"
"Anne and Jim. What does Mommy call Grandma and Grandpa?"
"I don't know. What?"
"Mum and Dad."
"They're not your Mom and Dad!"
"Yes they are! Grandma and Grandma are my Mom and Dad."
"Why you don't live with them?"

uh oh... Have I given birth to a boomerang kid?

We're going to put an offer in on Hawthorne. I don't know if the owner will accept it, of course. The house has just been on the market a couple of weeks, so the owner may think he can get more money if he waits (and maybe he can), but I want to try. If we didn't make the offer, I think I'd wonder "what if" every time I drove by the house. This way, either we won't be driving by or I won't need to wonder.

When I get the chance, I'm going to post a back-dated entry: part II of last weekend's house search. I don't want to forget the decision-making process.

don't people make counteroffers anymore? Is there some sense that the market is recovering that's making sellers more stubborn about price?

oh, they do!

We're the ones who won't. We don't have the time to fuck around nor the inclination to spend any more, so we offered what we believe to be a fair price. If our offer isn't accepted, we'll go to the next house on the list.

Our broker is making it clear that our offer is firm.

We also don't want to torture sellers the way we felt tortured in selling our house. You like the price? Cool. You don't? Also cool. And BUH-BYE.

yeah, we tried that with one offer -- they countered anyway ...and we walked.

And we're ever so grateful, since we found (and continue to love) the house we eventually bought a few months later.
