12:00 pm: 30 Days of Truth: Day 25 → The reason you believe you’re still alive today
There are many reasons I'm alive, I suppose, starting and continuing with my parents, who, beyond contributing the original cells and incubation facility (no small task in and of itself, at least for the incubation facility), are the best parents I could ask for and also dear friends, so THANKS MOM & DAD!

Dunno if I've ever been at serious risk of not being alive, if y'wanna be literal. I had many bad ear infections as a kid. I got a nasty kidney infection when I was in college. I had a high-risk pregnancy. I've had a couple of rotten stomach flus. I had one particularly nasty tooth infection. If I lived elsewhere, any of those could've killed me. So luck has played something of a part. And good doctors and dentists. And clean water to drink.

I've driven unsafely a couple of times - not drunk, but exhausted. That was stupid. More luck there.

I've had pretty bad allergic reactions to sulfa drugs, so being born at the right time helps.

Ever since I took Fen-Phen (actually a Fen variation called Redux), I've had high blood pressure. And it's been controlled by medications of one sort or another, so there's another point for living in a first-world country and having good doctors (and the whole supply chain from R&D through pharmaceutical companies, manufacturers, distributors, etc.).

I've been fat most of my life, but have exercised and eaten fairly healthfully for the last 15 years or so, which I suppose is some combination of luck (access to facilities and resources) and my own work (go me).

Blargh. This question seems more oriented to people who've had some sort of major crisis in their lives. I've never come THISCLOSE to dying (that I know of... or at least that I remember), so all I can answer is the various things that have helped me stay reasonably healthy. Being fairly risk averse probably helped (hang-gliding notwithstanding).

Friends and family (and personal effort too, I suppose) have kept me reasonably mentally healthy. (MWA HA HA! I ONLY SEEM NUTS! I'M NOT REALLY!)

So. Right.

Luck, mostly. Lucky to live when and where I do. Lucky to have the family and friends that I have.

Yeah, weird question. I am alive today because the right sperm and egg came together and nothing has happened yet to kill me.

I suppose this one would be fascinating if I'd nearly died of something, but I'd rather have it my way. ;)

So maybe the question is poorly worded, and what it really means is what do you think the purpose of your life is supposed to be? (I think that's lame, too, 'cause I believe more in luck than PURPOSE.)
