03:11 pm: lots of new stuff
Despite my good intentions, I'm still not posting as often as I'd like. Oops!

I'm adjusting to the new job, the new schedule, and the new lifestyle.

The job isn't quite what I'd thought, but I think it'll work out just fine anyway. I'm managing more people than I thought I would be (fortunately, that's the part of the job I was most looking forward to). The department and company are more in flux than I'd anticipated, but that means there will be even more opportunities than I'd hoped for to effect change.

So it's good, just different.

My peers are fabulous. My team is solid. The company is great.

But ironing? I don't like ironing. And when I want to look professional, or at least not like a slob, I don't want to be all wrinkly.

Wearing shoes all day isn't great, either. I'm going to need to find better socks. There's a lot of walking; the main building is huge and I work with people in other buildings as well. Walking is good, as long as I have the right shoes and socks and allow sufficient time between meetings (~15 minutes, just to get from one to the next).

So I'm adjusting. Just not exactly to the things or in the ways I'd expected.

On an extremely happy note, I finally got my unemployment money. It took almost 3 months! Egads.

I am a very recent but no-looking-back convert to SmartWool socks. if you have cold, sweaty, achy feet, these are miraculous. They ain't cheap, but worth twice the price. they're durable, require no special care, and YAY.

For shoes, I also can't recommend Danskos hard enough. I stand on my feet 8 hours per day, and my feet Simply No Longer Hurt. They feel weird for the first day you wear them (they will feel large)... just accept and trust that you won't step out of them. They are amaaaaaazing. also, not cheap, but I've had my current pair since 2008 and they RULE.

Glad the money is coming in. Congrats on the job!

Thanks for the recommendations! Sadly, my feet tend to get hot rather than cold, so I'm looking for work-appropriate coolmax. I've found some black ones (yeah!), but they're ankle socks, where I'd prefer something a bit taller.

I've heard marvelous things about Dansko--I'll look 'em up for wide sizes.

I bought some but had to return them. Zappo's said they were wide, but they were nowhere near wide enough. :sigh:

Mighty glad about free return shipping.</p>

So the quest continues.

yay! i'm so glad things are going well. if you're going to do that much walking, these shoes will be your best friend: http://www.aerosoles.com/eng/product/tornado/tornado i bought them in black and taupe for this assignment, because i'd be waling so much, and they're a godsend. i walked a mile to work in them last week, and it was like wearing sneakers. plus they have juuust enough of a heel that they can look fine in a business environment.

Unfortunately, I'm really hard to fit. Women's normal width is a B and I'm a double-E. I think I'm not into shoes as self-preservation because the super-cute ones never come in my size.

It's great that things are working out. I have no advice on footwear, save that I'm a huge fan of shoes that have Antarctic birds on their soles. And that's not so much advice as it is a declarative statement.

I'm glad the unemployment money came through and I'm sorry you had a similar saga as I did. I wonder if it's a Forum thing....

I'll call sometime soonish so we can catch up.

I'd love to chat whenever you can. :)

I want to hear more about those shoes, too.
