Everything goes in the mailbox. Books under the rug? "Mailbox," he tells me. Cars through the spokes on the bed? "Mailbox." Books into the radiator covers? "Mailbox." Baby (rubber) ducky through the safety gate? "Mailbox."

I'm glad we don't have forced hot air heat, with air ducts. My brother and I threw a lot of books into the heaters when I was about Teddy's age.* At the rate Teddy's going, he'd have no books left by next week.

Yes, indeed. We still think we ought to have some of them on a shelf nearby. (They were our books, not yours.) But you and he--about two and four (or a little under) filled the hot air shaft with books -- from the furnace in the basement to the attic. And the house with smoke. And the fire department not only had to come, but also had to knock a hole in the wall to get the smoldering mess cleared out. We had to go to Jean and Bill's for dinner, where they were serving periwinkles (brought by John P. as I recall, probably erroneously). Thanks for the memories!

I think they're a snail-like clam, but the nice thing about getting old is that you can scramble memory like crazy and there ain't nobody around to correct you ('cept yoah Daddy an' he don' read comments, I don' think!) Memories get distorted like crazy, too. Like I really remember? Who knows? I may have thought they were snail-like at the time, and they may have been clams. Or I may have thought they were like clams, and they weren't like them at all, but like snails, and not called periwinkles.
