02:53 pm: Give us this day our daily bread (and potatoes and cheese and pork)
Yep, this is the post where I whine about the food in the Czech Republic.

This is supposedly about Teddy, so I'll give his version first:
w00t! french fries!

He's had french fries at least once a day since we've been here. Thank goodness for yogurt and beans (we brought our own beans, but they sell the yogurt-with-candy stuff here, so we've not opened the M&Ms) and breast milk. Otherwise, he'd be getting nothing remotely nutritious.

I know one of grandparents' supposed functions is spoiling the grandchild, but my folks are really wonderful about not giving him crap to eat. One wee, plaintive cry for "česka čokoláda" (Czech chocolate) and his Babi and Děda hand over the candy. Blargh.

Anyhoo, on to the whining (feel free to tune out now). Pork every day. Cheese 2-3 meals a day. Bread with every meal.

Czechs buy bread every day, mostly mini-baguettes (read: white bread with no nutrients or fiber). They deliberately buy more than they need, so they can let the balance go stale (seriously, there are stacks of drying-out bread in every household I've visited). It then gets made into breadcrumbs, into which pork is rolled before frying it.

mmmm... tasty. ONCE. Maybe twice. Daily? Not so much.

My veggie intake since here has comprised one head of iceberg lettuce, three cucumbers, about six carrots, a crapload of cabbage, a half-head of cauliflower (boiled, dipped in egg, flour, then the aforementioned breadcrumbs, then deep-fried), and approximately two dozen potatoes (boiled or fried, no skin).

Apparently Czechs have a higher incidence of bowel cancer than any other country. I can't imagine why. I don't know what their rate of heart disease is, but the lard and salt can't be helping.

Ugh. Grumble grumble grumble.

New back-dated entries coming momentarily (unless the kid wakes up, in which case it may be an hour or so).

"A crapload of cabbage"...

That's funny. With that diet, I can't believe you've had any craploads.

Veggies and fiber when you return! I miss you!

more like craplettes

Peter wanted pizza when we got home. I wanted a salad. I have the feeling that Peter should do the first grocery shopping, because I'm likely to buy more veggies than we can possibly eat before they go bad, just because I CAN.

There are vegetables in Czech grocery stores - they're just not green vegetables. Celeriac, turnips, onions, and of course endless potatoes. Nothing leafy (unless you count iceberg lettuce, which I don't).
