06:00 am: what a beautiful wedding!
derbyhat and Steph got married yesterday. :sniff, sniff:

Untrue to form, I didn't actually cry very much. The event was so filled with humor and activity, I didn't get much opportunity.

It was beautiful. Gorgeous day, perfect venue, and rather astonishing attention to detail. Every piece of paper was quirky, off-beat, and totally coordinated: invitations, programs, place cards, drink tickets, all of it. The amount of work that must have gone into it! Either they got the most amazing vendor ever, or they did a crapload of work themselves, gluing things together askew (nothing was square; everything involved multiple pieces).

Probably both, now that I think of it.

Even the frickin' bubbles were fantastic. I brought my leftovers home for Teddy, natch, and told Peter to save the bottle, 'cause the wand makes tooooons of perfect little bubbles. I've never seen such a simple device work so darned well. Each dip in the soap would make a half-dozen looong breaths of little bubbles. Amazing.

The linens were perfect. The flowers were the most gorgeous I've ever seen. Ingeniously, they were perched on top of very tall vases (2.5 feet?), so everyone at the table could see each other. There were beautiful stems and blooms in those vases too. Gorgeous. And huge! Much bigger than I realized, sitting under them. Marc gave me the ones from my table to take home, and they pretty much cover our dining room table.

Marc sent his henchmen groomsmen over with level-one questionnaires for our table, which was hilarious. Of course we dutifully filled them out. Very fun.

The food was surprisingly good (let's face it: food at wedding venues frequently, well, sucks), with yummy appetizers passed while the wedding party photos were taken and an excellent salad and entree after the cake was cut. This was an excellent plan, as there wasn't an eternity to wait for the cake to be cut and served after lunch.

The DJ was one of my absolute favorites from Boston*, who's one of the only ones who can balance lindy and west coast music. There were very few lindyhoppers there (4 if you reeeally stretch the definition but don't include the groom, who mostly got mandatory dances), but I did get to dance with the beautiful jenches, which was loads of fun.

The first dance and dances with parents were moving and charming and wonderful choices of music. First dance was a lovely foxtrot to "Cheek to Cheek" (dunno whose version, though it wasn't Ella), with a few tiny irreverent moments that totally fit the couple but didn't involve stupid, endless choreography (a pet peeve of mine with dancers' weddings... it just seems so contrived). The bride's dance with her father was done to a country song I didn't recognize, but I think was Heartland's "I Loved Her First" and the groom's dance with his mother was to Louis Armstrong's version of "Sunrise Sunset" (from "Fiddler on the Roof").

Oh, and the bridal party was introduced to Mahna Mahna, from the Muppets. And the cake (gorgeous!) was cut to Stauss' sprach Zarathustra (the theme from "2001: A Space Odyssey").

Good times, good times.

* SlickMike. His wife had a son, Oliver Michael, last week (a month early, so he's still in the hospital). The son was scheduled for hernia surgery either yesterday (? someone said, which I find somewhat difficult to believe, both 'cause Mike was at the event and 'cause who schedules surgery for Labor Day?) or soon.

Marc got married!!!

How fantastic! It must have been fun. If you get a chance -- tho he's on his honeymoon now -- tell him I said "hi".

Just back from Indiana. The Troll King (my dad) is still doing well. He gets his words mixed up which leads to some pretty funny conversations.

I'll have to read up on your posts to see how the house hunting is going.
