"What are you doing, Teddy?"

"I'm holding your nur."

"Because I love it."

"Would you please sing please, Mommy?"

Flattered, I start "Close your eyes, you can close your eyes..."

"Rock-a-bye baby..."

"NO! No lullabies!"

"But it's bed-time Teddy, it's time for lullabies."

"NO lullabies!"

"What do you want me to sing?"

"Why do you have big eyes Mommy? Don't do big eyes!"

My eyes apparently widen when I'm peeved, so Teddy (correctly) perceives big eyes as big trouble.

"Why do I need a rug for work?"

"I'm not really sure. That's the way your school does things: you put your work on a rug. I think it keeps all the materials in one place."

"Why is it called work?"

"A lot of what your school calls work, other people would call play. Things like stacking blocks. Did you think it was fun?"

"Yes. I like the cylinders. I didn't want to sweep." (He took out a rug and the materials for work that involved sweeping. He then decided he'd rather do something else. Can't say that I blame him. So he stacked up cylinders instead.)

Teddy's new school (starting next week, I hope) is a Montessori school. They're very structured. I think Teddy needs it, but some of it takes a bit of explaining.
