03:08 pm: what a freakin' day
Teddy's sick (funny that he rarely got sick for 3.5 years, and now he's on his second cold in the 6 weeks since he started school... odd what exposure to germs will do). He was awake much of the night trying to hack up a lung. Being the night-time moron that I am*, it took me a couple of hours to figure out that it was worth giving the child a lollipop and risking a cavity if it would let him sleep.

(AAP says NO cough medicine is safe or effective at his age. He's too young for cough drops, too. Lollipops help soothe his throat and they're not as likely to be swallowed.)

So he slept late this morning, but then wouldn't nap.

Because I'm mostly on vacation until January 5 (working just a couple of half-days, plus of course checking email in case something urgent happens with my system), I have some work I absolutely must get done. That's a freakin' treat on a snowy day when I should be snuggled under a blanket in front of the fire, basking in the glow of the lights from the Christmas tree and reading some smut. Or cuddling with my child and watching a Christmas show (we haven't seen Elf yet this season, for instance).

But I figured I'd get most of the work done during Teddy's nap. The nap he didn't take.

And then I found out that my system, while technically up and running, isn't actually working (for anyone who cares about such things: web server running, index functioning, search functioning, database apparently kaput, as any attempt to post causes some variation on a nasty error).

Crap-a-licious. I should note that the work I have to do is analysis of a survey I conducted on how this system is helping people. I had just sent an email to my boss and to the president of the company with quite good news when I discovered the system isn't functioning. Fan-freakin'-tastic!

And I have cramps for the third day, which indicates I probably need more freakin' surgery for endometriosis, which is always fun. And I apparently ate a walnut, 'cause I have a canker sore.

And my Dad had surgery yesterday, which apparently went well, but he's in a lot of pain and I worry about him.

I also got our AmEx bill, which provided ample proof that buying a house and having Christmas in the same year is a bad idea. I had thought that I'd be carrying a balance for just one month, and was mighty proud of managing to do that for the first time after a move (I've had the cards paid off for years, but have always ended up in debt after moving). Turns out I'll be carrying a balance for a few months, which really, really irks me. I try hard to pay with cash, but it's not always practical (or even possible).

And I just paid off the card with the lower interest rate last week, "knowing" I could pay off the higher-rate one too.

At this point, I'm just hoping everyone's well enough to get together for Teddy's birthday (and that Teddy can go to school for pajama days and for special pumpkin muffin snacks and to open the gift we gave the school) and for Christmas. The garbagemen and the postal carrier might not get gifts (and the family might not get leftovers). The house may not get cleaned.

And I'm just gonna have to be ok with that. Dammit.

* Not that I'm laying any claim to non-moron status at other times, but I'm especially dim-witted at night.

Don't worry about us (sniff) -- joke!!!

Sorry about all the stuff floating (or blasting) near your fan. 'Tis the season to be broke. Dad's much better, so don't worry about us. We're so slow we won't be ready for Christmas.
