12:42 pm: the house gets a colonoscopy

So Teddy was sick, we had guests coming, and there was sewage in our basement sink.

After many phone calls (more urgent to me than to various plumbers) and too much waiting, the local roto-rooter equivalent came and stuck a camera into our pipes. His diagnosis was constipation, more or less: we had tree roots and the pipes hadn't been cleaned in at least 15 years.

He did his thing. He assured us that it'll be more than 15 years before we'll need his service again (unlike our old house, the pipes here are not close to the trees).

We had a very tense few hours, but there was neither visual nor olfactory evidence of poo by the time the guests arrived.

Thank goodness, because one of our guests got a violent stomach upset* a few hours later and spent the night barfing.

Not wanting to spread germs ourselves, we canceled our trip to Boston. Dammit.

* She's quite certain of the source: a student who hugged her, cheerily saying "I just threw up!" Apparently it didn't occur to the student that perhaps other people wouldn't be as cheerful at the prospect of having germs thrust upon them. Horrific as it would be, I almost wish our guest had become ill from something I served her (we had sushi; no one else got sick), because then I wouldn't be worried about the river of snot being joined by the river of vomit.

I'm going to celebrate the weekend by having a nap.
