02:36 pm: well, that explains the last few nights...
Teddy has double ear infections: one very nasty and one just beginning.

Last night was baaad. No bath, but plenty of whimpering. We tried sleeping in the big chair so he could be vertical, but that didn't work out. At around 1:30, he woke up and said his ear was hurting and started smacking himself upside the head. Quite alarming. But I gave him some Tylenol and a Benadryl, and he settled back down and slept another 7 hours (he never sleeps that late).

He claimed he was all better this morning, but that was wishful thinking. He really, really didn't want to miss music class.

And I really, really didn't want to go any longer without having him seen. Of course, he felt fine when he had his doctor's appointment last week. He had fluid in his ears, but no signs of infection. So I made an appointment for him to see an ENT at the end of the month... and then this nasty infection showed up.

We're keeping the ENT appointment to make sure that the antibiotics take care of the infections.

He's not in as much pain; the doctor said it's like a pimple bursting - the pressure builds and builds, and is greatly relieved when it erupts (ruptures? not sure). The other ear is in the building stage, but I trust the antibiotics will keep it from getting worse.

I'm still foggy and a bit dizzy, but better. Peter's a little spacey, but also better. So we're all on the mend.

I hope you all feel better... and 'fascinating'!

First, how awful! Two ear infections! I don't know what I'm going to do when that happens in the OC household. But it sounds like (or maybe you write so eloquently that) you're doing okay now, with antibiotics in his system. I hope you all get some sleep now.

Fascinating because I never connected smacking the side of your head as a sign for an ear infection... and dd has been doing that a bit more lately. No fever, general crankiness but I've attributed that to crazy schedules, etc. She's not been swimming lately (or ever) so I suppose the head-smacking isn't an attempt to get the water out of her ears (though we did just fly, maybe her ears are still acclimating to be on the ground? hmmmmm....). I think maybe we'll take a look this next week.

What I learn from reading your blog.

Love You!!!!!!

I think ear pulling is more typical than ear smacking, but yes, any action in the area can be a sign.

Of course, Teddy pulled his ears like crazy when he first found them, just 'cause it was fun (or something). And ears are connected to jaws which are connected to teeth, so it's also pretty typical of teething pain.
