06:06 am: well, that sucked
Layoffs at my company yesterday - about 20% of the remaining workforce. No doubt it was necessary. No doubt it was painful to those who made the decisions. No doubt it sucked... especially for those who were laid off, of course.

I wasn't laid off, but two of my closest friends were. I'm the last person left in the knitting group. It feels awful. Not as awful as having no job, although I do get the guilt gravy on the top.

I hate this economy. I hate that you can't have a conversation - particularly a business conversation - where it isn't a part (implicit if not explicit).

And yes, I hate the salary cut and the inability to carry over vacation and having to do more work with fewer people. I'm already insanely busy most of the time (with the occasional lull). I love my job, and I know how lucky I am to be busy at something I love and hell, lucky to be employed. I love my new boss as much as my old boss (in different ways; it should be really interesting to see how that relationship shifts things).

I had a few days of real panic, because I knew something was hinky and that something big must be in the offing. It was a huge relief (guilt notwithstanding) to be one of those who remain in the company. Being the sole bread-winner is enormously stressful, and my contingency plans were not happy ones. We haven't yet re-built the emergency fund sufficiently.

So yippee! I have a job!

and yet... yesterday sucked. And the coming days will suck. And there will be residual suckage for months. We do have a new organization structure that seems to really make sense. We have outsourced some functions that sorely needed it (the difficulty to the people in those functions notwithstanding). We are better equipped to execute our strategy in many ways.

But still.

I'm sorry!

This economy, and the state of things, sucks.
