12:01 pm: Wow, I really am that behind on posting
Oops. Let me sum up:
- I got sick. Nothing exciting or extreme, just cold/flu/whatever.
- We went to Orlando. I didn't want to post my whereabouts (i.e., "hey! No one's home! Come on over!") 'cause there have been several robberies in our town recently. Eek. All you regular readers are marvelous, trusted peeps, but who knows where the lurkers lurk.
- Peter & Teddy returned from Orlando. I stayed there to attend a conference (Masie's Learning 2010), which was mostly good. I live-tweeted it, which (1) ran down the batteries on my iPhone and laptop and (2) left me disinclined to, y'know, write and stuff.
- I returned from Orlando, still sick.

The sickies

I've now been riding the snot train for 2 weeks, and I'm tired of it. Can't breathe through my nose, and I hate mouth-breathing. :grumble, grumble: Also got cramps while at Disney. Whoopee. And blisters all over my toes and the balls of my feet (walking 28+ miles apparently will do that). And got a blister right at the end of my tongue. And laryngitis for several days.

Blog! It's a new word for "whine!"

Teddy and I went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter the first day of our trip. It was mostly fun, though it was hot and crowded (not as crowded, thank goodness, as I've heard it was over the summer). The wait to get into Dervish and Bangs was only about 20 minutes (2 hours over the summer, egads). We got a Hedwig puppet for Teddy and postcards (stamped Hogsmeade) for me. We tried frozen butterbeer (which is weird - the foamy head tastes like a yummy, lightly butterscotchy vanilla milkshake; the rest tastes extremely sweet and fizzy) and pumpkin juice (slightly spiced apple juice - would be fab-o heated on a cold day, but was cloying in the heat). We had lunch at the Three Broomsticks (ok food & service, fabulous set decoration). We skipped Ollivanders and Honeydukes 'cause of long lines and the rides because of lines and/or height requirements (Teddy's too short for all but Flight of the Hippogriff).

By far and away our favorite part was the tour of Hogwarts. Teddy's too short for the ride, but we bopped right up to the front of the line to bypass the ride (twice). Fabulous special effects. WAAAY better than the museum tour (which we loved, but Universal left that exhibit in the dust). Teddy is still quite convinced that Dumbledore talked to him directly.

Saturday was Magic Kingdom and Sunday was Epcot. Fun times, lots of rides. Peter decided he didn't like it at all, so missed out on some of the magic. Party pooper. Favorites were Peter Pan's Flight and Winnie the Pooh at MK and Spaceship Earth, The Land, and Energy at Epcot. #1? The Lego store at downtown Disney. Of course.

Brain drain. Buh-raaaaiiinnnn Duh-raaaaiiinnn. Over 20 sessions available in each time slot with choices (2-3 sessions a day were general sessions in the big ballroom). Over-crowded. Almost all rooms were set up theater-style, which meant either tweeting on iPhone or balancing the laptop on my knees (remember those blisters? NOT happy about the balancing thang). Too many choices, too spread out. It was at the Coronado, which is lovely (food kinda sucks though), but very spread out. I should've done Disney after the conference.

Picked up around 40 new followers on Twitter, which was weird. I was tweeting primarily for my company followers on Yammer and it didn't occur to me that anyone else would care what I had to say. Only discovered when I returned that a bunch of people had responded and I never answered. Oops. I'm used to using Digsby, which shows me when I'm named, but it's a bandwidth hog, so I didn't want to use it at the conference. The iPhone app and Twitter's page don't show that as easily. So I only saw tweets that used the conference hashtag, which I searched on regularly (and most people who responded to me didn't use the hashtag).

I must admit that I prefer smaller conferences. Intelligent Content 2010 was a good size - a couple of hundred people. No more than 2-3 simultaneous sessions. This one was overwhelming, though some sessions were terrific.

The original cast from Jersey Boys did their first gig under their new title - Midtown Men - at the conference on Tuesday. FANTASTIC show. Really wonderful.

Dancing afterward was all oontz-oontz/chicka-bow-bow electronic crap, so I left.

Home again

It's good to be home again. Teddy is still, a week later, adjusting. The kid is not a fast adapter. Granted, we returned to a lot of hustle and bustle. I'm still sick. Play date Thursday. A friend came to visit Friday night. Two Halloween events and a birthday party Saturday. Halloween Sunday (>500 trick or treaters this year, thank goodness).

Peter leaves for the Czech Republic next week, so I'll be single-parenting for a couple of weeks. Should be interesting.

I'll be back to my regular blogging schedule now, I hope.

So sorry you've been sick -- hope you're extra fine by the time Peter leaves. Disney sounds good, conference too bad, home again always wonderful.

Would it help or hinder to come visit you while Peter's gone?

Love the details... I'm quite sure Dumbledore did address Teddy specifically. Why wouldn't he? ;)

Why not indeed?

Teddy does not seem to have noticed that there was considerable overlap in what Dumbledore said directly to him on the two trips through Hogwarts.

We always love visits, but the timing would be important this time. My friend C is coming back for the evening of the 12th. My folks are coming 20-22. Any time between would be awesome. I am taking some vacation, but will be working part of every day (I wish I could say "weekdays only," but that would be a lie).

Re: Why not indeed?

Let me see what I can do... online training is a bit more intensive than I was expecting and I do want to get through it... I'll get back to you... :)

okey doke

Turns out C is coming this Thursday evening only - not even staying overnight. So if you *happened* to be free this weekend, so are we!

Re: okey doke

okay, looking ahead at my training and the week and... how does this work for you: dd and I drive over Tuesday morning/day and stay overnight, then drive back around noon on Wednesday? That's sort of the largest window of time we have open and that's my night off of training, even if I'm on again on Wednesday afternoon. If not this, what works better for you and I'll see what else I can move around....

We'd love to see you

Teddy gets out of school at 3:30 on Tuesday. Wednesday he's in school 8:30-11:30.

I have meetings 1-2 Tuesday and 10-11 Weds but am otherwise open, so the timing's quite good for me.

I hate for you to have to do the round-trip in less than 24 hours though! We can postpone to a better time if you'd like.
