12:23 pm: 30 Days of Truth: Day 16 → Someone or something you definitely could live without
I could live without mean - mine and others'. I don't mean the petty meanness... the teasing or the sarcasm that can let the air out of the tension balloon or show us our own foibles with a tiny laugh. I mean the real mean.

I think I do, anyway. 'Cause even petty meanness can be over the line for the right person in the right mood (or the wrong person in the wrong mood). Blargh.

The mean I'm trying to describe reflects a lack of sympathy or charity or compassion. Really, a lack of empathy. I don't always succeed (anyone who's ever driven with me knows that), but I strive for compassion. Maybe she pushed to the head of the line because she's desperately worried about getting home on time for a call from her child's doctor. Maybe he cut me off in traffic because he just learned to drive and he's nervous. Maybe that parent is letting that baby cry because the kid is a tension releaser, or maybe the parent just can't handle any more right this second.

My basic assumption is that we're all doing our very best in any particular situation (which sometimes isn't very good, but that happens).

...except for the mean. I have a really hard time being compassionate about people who are being mean. I understand that bullies need our love too. Intellectually, I understand. Emotionally, not so much.

That whole do unto others thing gets wrapped around its own axle. Yes, people should treat each others as they would wish to be treated, but doesn't that include a little leeway on a bad day? Or even a lot of leeway on a really bad day?

Oh scroot.

I could do without okra. Now and forever.

Okra is high on my list, too. How come your brother likes it? I figure if he had more of it, he'd change his mind. Too bad that isn't going to happen during my lifetime.

I can't think of any other reason. That stuff's appalling.
