07:53 am: unexpected trip East
I'm writing this from my folks' house, 86 miles from home.

Y'see, we lost power. Which means we lost heat.

And that was OK Saturday night, when it got down to the 40s overnight. But it was supposed to get down to the teens last night, and that was Most Definitely Not OK. So we took the risk of flouting the State of Emergency and left Longmeadow.

It was a scary ride out of town. Tree limbs (and trees) were down all over town. We had to take a circuitous route to Route 5, and trees were down there too (although it was mostly plowed, which made a big difference). At one point, we drove in tracks left by previous drivers onto the sidewalk (to get around a downed tree). Conditions got steadily better and seemed quite normal (with just a light dusting of snow) by the time we got around Worcester. Lines at gas stations were insane (no gas available in the Springfield area at all, so everyone hopped on the Pike and stopped at stations there, where you could buy as long as you had cash).

I don't know what we'll find when we get home again (tomorrow afternoon, I hope, although there's now an air-quality alert, which ain't good for my asthma), but I know we're safe and we're warm and we're with people we love. So that's good.

Halloween - our very biggest holiday in our no-longer-new-to-us house - has been canceled this year by the town for safety reasons. So Teddy will trick or treat here and the 5 enormous bags of candy (>1000 pieces) will sit in our basement until we figure out what to do with them. Teddy's school was canceled through tomorrow, too, so he's getting an extra-long weekend.

We're fine. Last we saw, our house was fine (though quite chilly). We didn't have to go to a shelter (not the kind run by the government, anyway). We'll probably need to empty out the fridge and the freezers and start over again. I hope we won't have any repairs, of course, but we'll deal with them if we do.

We're lucky. So far. Here's hoping it sticks.

whoa!!!! so glad you're OK, that's totally freaky.

re: the candy -- check and see if any local dentists are doing a candy drop-off tomorrow. some dentists around here take everyone's leftover candy and make care packages for deployed soldiers. :)

fantastic idea, thanks!

I'll definitely do that. We do NOT need that much candy in the house.
