So we got through Teddy's birthday party. We went back to the movies this year; we saw "The Rise of the Guardians" with 9 of Teddy's friends. No adults stayed this time, so it was lots cheaper but also a bit more hectic. As with The Frog Princess, I'll need to see the movie again because I missed parts here and there as I did bathroom runs with the kids.

Our host said it was the calmest, nicest party group he'd ever worked with. Maybe he was angling for a tip (which he got, and seemed genuinely surprised by), but it could've been true. They were mostly really good.

Teddy does have a couple of friends who are talkers. One in particular seemed to have a running commentary going through the movie. Fortunately, he was sitting next to another kid who's very responsible and who did a good job of shushing him.

After singing, cake, and ice cream, we did some word games (find the words in this word, word search, and a crossword). We made contests out of them, which kept the more, erm, active kids involved. We were able to avoid opening gifts at the party (a disaster at the last one).

I do believe we had kick-ass gift bags, with Lego mini-figures, stamps, and finger lights.

It seemed to work out just fine. In fact, Teddy declared it his party ever.

Sadly, my family's all sick, so it was just the 3 of us for the birthday itself. It was still fun and perhaps a smidge more productive. I made Teddy write a thank-you note for a party gift before opening a family gift. So the notes are done and mostly delivered (one girl is new to his school, so her address isn't in last year's book; for reasons that are unclear, they still haven't published this year's book).

It was a quiet day, but mostly a pleasant one. Peter worked in the afternoon, so Teddy built his Hobbit Lego while I finished reading the book to him. Then we watched the original Willy Wonka on TV (all the commercials - COMMERCIALS! EGADS! - were for perfumes, makeup, and home goods, to my perpetual surprise), had Taco Bell for dinner (Teddy's choice, of course), and read The Journey to the Center of the Earth before bed.

All in all, a good weekend.

innate avarice?

No idea, but it's a certainty.
