12:00 pm: PAnud (a story to savor later)
Because having the power to embarrass your child is important.*

Whenever Teddy's naked, he tends to grab his critical bits. He'll then smoosh, pull, and generally maim them until he's distracted by something else (bathtub: ooooh what's this? :pull: hey coool :squish: look! the shower curtain!) or covered up (diaper: faaar out! :pull: look how long this gets! HEY! I was using that! don't put it away!).

Because I want him to learn the proper words for things, I tend to say "yes, that's your penis [those are your testicles] Teddy." (Peter's response: "They're BALLS Teddy, be very careful, because BALLS are important!")

This morning, Teddy replied, clear as a bell: "PAnud!"

Dunno when I'll hear it again, but I was quite charmed.

* In the interest of full disclosure, here is my parents' embarrassing story about me... Apparently they had a specific verbal reaction to poopy diapers. One day, I reached down to touch myself and said: "YECH," clearly believing that that was the word for vagina.

I suppose we should consider ourselves lucky if Teddy doesn't call his penis "Stinky."

Too funny

Kate, this is hysterical and sounds like an exchange that Luis and I have with Nicolas. It sure does look like it would hurt - but Nicolas LOVES to grab, pull, etc. his business :-) Luis thinks Nicolas will get "beat up" if he calls things by their proper names and wants to make sure he uses appropriate slang.

Beating up didn't occur to me. Hmmm.... must think about that.

It does look as if the little tykes are hurting themselves, doesn't it?
